Deadline Approaching for TWIC Enrollment in the Baton Rouge Area

According to the United States Coast Guard (USCG) Baton Rouge Marine Safety Unit, the deadline for Transportation Worker Identification Credential, or TWIC, enrollment could be as early as December 2008. The office has not received an 'official' compliance date but they say it is imperative to prepare to meet this deadline. “We need people to enroll now so this important port security initiative can be implemented and disruptions to maritime operations can be avoided as TWIC compliance begins across the country,” said Capt. Mark P. O’Malley, Chief of the U.S. Coast Guard’s Office of Port and Facility Activities.

USCG Baton Rouge Port Security Specialist Harold Hebert says, “Last minute enrollment and card activation volumes will more than likely overwhelm the current enrollment site capabilities. This result would have a major impact on both Maritime Transportation Security Act (MTSA) regulated entities and contractor operations.”

Hebert says, “Currently, most facilities within the Baton Rouge port area will require ALL individuals entering their facility to possess a TWIC and will NOT be providing escorts for those not in possession of a TWIC.”

While 22,108 workers in Baton Rouge have enrolled in TWIC, only 10,638 TWIC have been activated. This means that fewer than 50 percent of enrolled workers have picked up their TWIC.

Workers should pre-enroll for their TWIC online www.tsa.gov/twic. Pre-enrollment reduces the time it takes to fully enroll in the TWIC program and reduces waiting at enrollment centers.

The final TWIC compliance date will be made in the Federal Register at least 90 days in advance.
