Awaiting TWIC Card Activation? You May Still Be Able to Enter a Facility

The U.S. Coast Guard and the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) have developed an alternative method for facilities to use to grant unescorted access to individuals who have applied but have yet to pick up and activate their Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC).
At the facility’s discretion, an individual may obtain unescorted access to secure areas of the facility, by providing to security personnel:
  1. A photo ID; and,
  2. Proof that their TWIC has been printed and is ready for activation.
Workers who can show that their TWIC has been printed and is awaiting activation are considered as having successfully passed the TSA security threat assessment. Examples of ways to demonstrate that a TWIC has been printed include, but are not limited to:
  1. Show a copy of the email, sent by TSA, during the notification process, that states that the TWIC is ready for pick-up;
  2. Provide the Facility Security Officer (FSO) with your TWIC application ID number which may then be verified by the FSO with the “check card status” feature on www.twicinformation.com; or,
  3. Provide the FSO with your first and last name. This information may then be used to determine the status of your TWIC using a secure website at homeport.uscg.mil.
This alternative method of entry will remain in effect until February 13, 2009 for several ports around the United States, including New Orleans and Baton Rouge. Upon expiration of this alternative method of entry, only individuals with a valid TWIC will be eligible for unescorted access to a regulated facility.
